(unique lines for string solos do not incur additional fees, but extended divisi passages which require separate staves (e.g. inclusion of a Violin III section) would incur an extra $5/mmin)
(EXTRA FEEs exist for:
- Any additional auxiliary instrument not listed (except for any percussion), or exceeding the instrument group limit: extra $5/mmin
- Post-production atmospheric enhancements/SFX: extra $10/mmin
- Solo vocalist (extra $3/mmin per vocalist if no text, $8/mmin per vocalist if inclusion of text)
- SATB choir (extra $5/mmin if no text, $15/mmin if inclusion of text)
All rates (amount CAD/music minute of final product) are for a standard Romantic-era orchestra (see dropdown), including any auxiliary instruments (e.g. saxophone, accordion) in order to achieve certain moods or textural variations. The composer will usually decide the most suitable orchestra size and instrumentation to fit the scope and mood of the project. Omission of any baseline orchestral instruments would not reduce the fee.
All music minutes (mmin) are open to two rounds of revisions at no extra fee, as long as a higher "Class of Creativity" is not required to facilitate the revision.
Flat rates are based on "creative stamina" requirements for different types of music minutes (mmin):
$0/mmin
Exact repeats, or exactly transposed repeats.
Silence between movements
Sustained single notes
$20/mmin
Direct borrowing of textures, rhythmic elements or themes from other composers.
Background/
atmosphere. Long sustained chords with minimal progression - not intended for independent listening.
$40/mmin
Repeat of already established thematic material with textural and harmonic variation (excluding theme and variations form)
$50/mmin
Active development of thematic material, with more thorough use of developmental techniques, like sequences, extended cadential progressions, contrapunctal sections to build tension and prepare for a climax.
$60/mmin
- Presentation of unique thematic material
Approximately 42 work hours of composing spent, for an average of $27.10/work hour
Incidental music for theatre productions tends to be the "middle ground" of creative density between standalone orchestral works (most intensive, expect higher rate) and soundtrack music (least intensive, expect lower rate), so it is included as an average example of how much I would valuate a long-form work of orchestral music.
